Application Of A Randomized Control Trial In Reducing Basic Science Teachers’ Depression Using Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy: Implications For Educational Managers

Abstract
The study determined the efficacy of Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) in the management of depression among secondary school science teachers using repeated measures. The study adopted a randomized controlled trial experimental design. A sample size of 86 senior secondary school teachers in Enugu state, Nigeria was used for the study. The Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) was utilized for gathering data. A 12-week intervention using rational emotive behavioral therapy was carried out, after which participants from both the intervention and control groups took a posttest. Additionally, a follow-up assessment was conducted two months later. The data gathered from this study were analyzed using mixed-design repeated-measures analysis of variance. The findings of the study revealed that REBT intervention led to a significant decrease in depression of Basic Science teachers in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study therefore, concludes that REBT has proven to be a viable therapeutic strategy for addressing depression among science teachers in Nigeria’s secondary schools.
